Drying removes vapour from a material; degassing removes dissolved or trapped gas. Both can place a changing load on the vacuum system. Select the pump for the required pressure and gas throughput throughout the cycle, including the period when the load is highest.
Define the process before selecting the pump
- Material and process temperature: what must be removed and what must remain?
- Chamber volume, batch size and acceptable evacuation or drying time.
- Vapour composition and estimated release rate, including any solvent or water load.
- Working-pressure profile, final pressure and how the end point is measured.
- Required cleanliness, exhaust handling and available utilities.
Compare suitable pumping approaches
Laboratory duties: Edwards D-LAB diaphragm pumps offer chemical-resistant wetted materials for compatible duties within their pressure range. XDD1 is a different choice for non-aggressive gases; the two are not universally interchangeable.
Oil-sealed pumping: Leybold SOGEVAC and MIL’S EVISA families can be considered where their gas and vapour limits fit the process. Specify oil management, gas ballast and inlet protection rather than assuming a standard pump accepts liquid carryover.
Higher-throughput industrial duties: DRYVAC and VARODRY dry screw families provide further options. A RUVAC Roots booster can form part of a correctly sized backing-pump combination. Nominal booster displacement is not the complete-system speed.
Protect the pump and measure the process
Review condensers, knock-out vessels or separators where the duty requires them, and include exhaust treatment in the installation scope. Trapping condensate can reduce the vapour load reaching the pump, but sizing depends on the process and operating conditions. Do not assume an accessory is included with the pump.

Does a lower ultimate pressure mean faster drying?
Not necessarily. Ultimate pressure describes a limiting test condition, while a loaded process depends on throughput, temperature, vapour release and conductance. Compare the pump curve at the intended working pressure and the complete process cycle.
Get help specifying the equipment
For drying or degassing, send the chamber volume, target and working pressures, required cycle time, gas or vapour composition, temperature, operating hours and available power. Include any existing pump and gauge details. Girovac can then review the pump, protection, instrumentation and accessories as one proposed scope.
