Oil, diffusion fluid or grease: what is the difference?

How to select a vacuum oil or grease
- Identify the equipment. Use the pump nameplate and manual to establish the manufacturer’s fluid specification.
- Identify what is already in use. Record the exact product name and grade. Similar viscosity alone does not establish interchangeability.
- Describe the process. Include gases, vapours, operating temperature and any contamination or oxygen-service requirements.
- Check the current data. Confirm the TDS, SDS, approved changeover procedure and quantity before filling or applying the product.
Support for the major vacuum manufacturers
Ask about fluids for Edwards, Leybold, MIL’S, DVP, Busch and Pfeiffer equipment. A manufacturer name alone is not enough to select an oil: the model, existing grade and process determine suitability. Girovac can help with branded-fluid enquiries and investigate an alternative where the specification allows it.

Questions about vacuum fluids
Can I use any vacuum pump oil in my pump?
No. The oil must meet the pump manufacturer’s requirements and be compatible with the process. Mineral, synthetic, silicone and PFPE fluids are not automatically interchangeable.
What information does Girovac need for a quote?
Send the pump make and model, current product and grade, process gases or vapours, operating conditions and required quantity. Include a photograph of the nameplate if the model is unclear.
Does a lower published pressure mean a better oil?
Not necessarily. Vapour pressure describes a material property at a particular temperature; ultimate pressure describes performance under test conditions. Neither figure alone predicts the pressure your complete system will reach.
Are all listed pack sizes available immediately?
