The Leybold TURBOVAC is a turbomolecular pump for high and ultra-high vacuum. The current i/iX series covers pumping speeds from 90 to 1390 l/s and reaches an ultimate pressure of ≤8×10-8 mbar (≤5×10-10 mbar on the iX). Girovac is an authorised Leybold distributor for supply, service and spares.
Turbomolecular pumps knock gas molecules towards the exhaust with high-speed bladed rotors, so they need a backing pump beneath them. See our guide to vacuum pump types and Leybold brand page.
Why the TURBOVAC i/iX?
The TURBOVAC i/iX range offers high pumping speed, oil-free hybrid-bearing operation and low vibration – suited to analytical instruments, R&D and coating. Leybold is the world’s oldest vacuum manufacturer and built the first molecular pump (the ancestor of the turbo) in 1909.
Backing pump & system
A TURBOVAC needs a suitable backing pump – typically a scroll or two-stage rotary vane pump – to exhaust to atmosphere. Matching the backing pump correctly is essential for performance; if in doubt, ask us to specify the system.
Service & spares
Turbo pumps are precision machines: bearing service and controller checks should be done by specialists. Girovac supplies TURBOVAC pumps and spares and arranges service – contact our workshop.

Frequently asked questions
What ultimate vacuum does a Leybold TURBOVAC reach?
The TURBOVAC i reaches an ultimate pressure of about 8×10^-8 mbar, and the iX variant about 5×10^-10 mbar, with a suitable backing pump. Pumping speeds range from 90 to 1390 l/s.
Does a TURBOVAC need a backing pump?
Yes. Like all turbomolecular pumps, a TURBOVAC cannot exhaust to atmosphere on its own and needs a backing pump – typically a scroll or two-stage rotary vane pump.
Is Girovac an authorised Leybold distributor?
Yes. Girovac is an authorised UK distributor for Leybold and can supply TURBOVAC pumps, backing pumps, spares and servicing.
