Choosing RV5 Two-Stage Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump

The Edwards RV5 is a two-stage oil-sealed pump for laboratory vacuum, analytical equipment and suitable turbomolecular backing duties. It delivers 5.1 m³/h peak pumping speed at 50 Hz, with selectable high-vacuum and high-throughput modes for different gas loads.

The RV5 provides a mid-range choice for small laboratory systems and instrument backing. Compare the RV3 for lower flow or RV8 where gas load requires more capacity.

Key specifications

Ultimate pressure is measured under the manufacturer’s test conditions and is not a guaranteed chamber pressure. The PFPE-prepared rating is 0.02 mbar rather than the 0.002 mbar hydrocarbon-oil value. Water-vapour handling depends on warm-up, mode, gas ballast and operating conditions. Keep the original brochure conditions with each figure.

High vacuum and high throughput modes

The mode selector changes the operating envelope: high-vacuum mode supports lower ultimate pressure, while high-throughput mode permits higher continuous inlet pressure. The brochure gives 0.03 mbar ultimate pressure in high-throughput mode. Pumping down a chamber from atmosphere does not mean continuous operation at atmospheric inlet pressure is permitted.

Electrical and oil configuration

For a UK single-phase installation, request the 230 V setting and the separately selected UK three-pin cord set A50505000. Three-phase versions use their own wiring and protection requirements. Standard ULTRAGRADE configurations are supplied with an initial oil charge according to the brochure. PFPE-prepared pumps require separately ordered PFPE fluid; do not treat changing oil as converting a standard pump into a PFPE-prepared build.

Accessories and maintenance

Specify inlet protection, foreline trapping, exhaust mist filtration and any oil-return arrangement for the application. The brochure lists FL20K foreline traps, EMF10/EMF20 mist filters, vibration isolators and acoustic enclosures as accessories; an illustration is not an included-equipment list. Confirm filter sizing and oil-return compatibility for the selected gas-ballast duty.
