A portable gauge is useful when you want to check more than one machine without fitting a permanent instrument to each. Before buying one, write down the lowest pressure you need to measure. That single detail makes the choice between Leybold’s PV201 and TM201 much clearer.
Choose the measuring range first
| Instrument | Published range | Measurement principle |
|---|---|---|
| PIEZOVAC PV201 | 2000 to 1 mbar absolute | Piezoresistive |
| THERMOVAC TM201 | 1200 to 5 × 10⁻⁵ mbar absolute | Combined piezo/Pirani |
The PV201 is a rough-vacuum instrument with gas-independent piezoresistive measurement. The TM201 follows a pump-down into fine vacuum. Its Pirani measurement depends on the gas, so the gas composition belongs in the specification.
For a process operating at 100 mbar absolute, compare the accuracy required around that pressure. For a test extending below 1 mbar, the PV201’s range is insufficient even if it is convenient for your other machines. Buying the broadest range is not a substitute for checking performance at the points that matter.
Decide what you want to record
Both instruments provide a graphic display and data logging, with USB-C connection and Bluetooth versions available. Decide whether you need an occasional reading, a pump-down record or a file to compare before and after maintenance.
Record enough context to make the trace useful: machine, connection point, gas, valve positions and starting conditions. A faster pump-down after a service is difficult to interpret if the test volume or measurement position has also changed.
Plan the connection to each machine
List the fittings needed at each test point and check the instrument’s exact connection arrangement. Keep the connection appropriate to the pressure and process. A long, narrow hose can make a remote reading less representative during a changing gas flow.
A portable instrument is a diagnostic tool. Do not assume it can replace the fixed pressure switch, control transducer or interlock that a machine relies on.
Order the whole measuring package
Identify the standard or Bluetooth model, case, charger and adapters required. If the readings form part of acceptance testing or a quality record, specify calibration points and certificate requirements before ordering. A general request for “a calibrated gauge” leaves too much unresolved.
For a workshop sharing one meter, also decide how it will be stored, charged and identified between jobs. Those small arrangements make it much more likely that the instrument will be available and ready when needed.
