“We need a filter for the vacuum pump” can describe two quite different jobs. Material may need to be kept out of the inlet, or oil mist may need to be separated at the exhaust. DVP’s FBO and FDS ranges address those different positions in the installation.
FBO: protect the inlet from dust
The DVP FBO uses a stainless-steel mesh cartridge and an oil bath to collect particles before they reach the pump. Selection needs the pump model, gas flow, working pressure and the type and quantity of dust.
Connection size alone is not a sizing method. A filter that bolts into the line may still introduce too much pressure loss or require servicing too often for the process. Describe how much material arrives during a shift and whether the loading changes between products.
An oil-bath filter also needs access for inspection and maintenance. Include its position in the installation drawing and confirm compatibility where keeping oil away from the process is a requirement.
FDS: separate oil mist at the exhaust
The DVP FDS range collects oil mist from the exhaust of lubricated rotary vane pumps. It should be selected around the pump, exhaust flow and permitted back pressure.
An oil-mist separator is not a general solution for every gas or vapour in the exhaust. If the process contains hazardous or unpleasant vapours, describe them so that the complete exhaust arrangement can be assessed. Separating droplets and treating the gas stream are different requirements.
Check the equipment already fitted
Some pumps have an exhaust mist eliminator within their supplied assembly. Before adding an external separator, identify the existing equipment and explain the problem you are trying to resolve. Send a photograph of the outlet, any filter housing and the exhaust pipework.
For an inlet filter replacement, quote the existing housing and element references. A complete assembly, replacement cartridge and gasket kit are different items, even when a supplier uses the same range name for all three.
Make maintenance practical
Leave room to open the housing and remove the element. Decide how the need for service will be identified using the manufacturer’s instructions and the site’s operating conditions. Avoid burying a service item behind fixed pipework or under a machine enclosure.
If the process produces liquid slugs or a heavy contamination load, a filter may be only one part of the protection arrangement. Explain the process first and select the combination afterwards.
Send the information that identifies the job
Include pump and filter nameplates, inlet or exhaust position, pressure, flow, contaminants, connection sizes and operating hours. State whether you need a first installation or a replacement part. That is enough to begin a useful discussion about protection, fitment and the supplied scope.
Discuss your equipment requirement
For other inlet protection options, see Walker Alpha vacuum pump protection filters. Select the filter grade and housing for the actual duty. For a quotation, send your requirements to Girovac or call 01692 660 117.
